Impatiens: descrizione
Impatiens è un genere di piante della famiglia delle Balsaminaceae che comprende piante erbacee, annuali o perenni, originarie dell’Africa e dell’Asia. Il nome di questo genere di piante dal latino impatiens «impazienza» , ed è legato al fatto che i frutti appena sono maturi si aprono e al minimo tocco e lanciano i semi anche molto lontano. Questa pianta è nota anche come fiore di vetro , perché i suoi fusti si spezzano facilmente al minimo tocco, ma anche come Balsamine o Lisetta .
L’impatiens presentano piccoli fusti sottili e carnosi molto ramificati, di colore verde chiaro, con numerose piccole foglie di forma quasi cuoriformi, appuntite, con margine dentellato, di colore verde scuro o verde chiaro.
Nel loro habitat di origine la fioritura avviene durante tutto l’anno, invece nelle nostre zone l’impatiens fioriscono da maggio e per tutta l’estate. I fiori hanno cinque petali, possono essere tondi o appiattiti o provvisti di sperone, solitari, doppi, o riuniti in pannocchie o racemi, dal colore che va dal rosso al viola e al blu.

Impatiens walleriana
La Impatiens walleriana è una specie erbacea nativa dell’Africa orientale che non supera i 40-50 centimetri d’altezza. E’ caratterizzata da fusti carnosi e screziati di rosso le foglie sono picciolate di un bel verde intenso tendente al bronzeo. Impatiens glandulifera (Impatiens roylei)
L’impatiens glandulifera è una pianta annuale originaria dell’Himalaya. Tramite l’introduzione umana è ora presente in gran parte dell’emisfero settentrionale ed è considerata una specie invasiva in molte aree. Può raggiungere da 1 a 2 metri di altezza con uno stelo morbido verde o tinto di rosso e foglie lanceolate lunghe da 5 a 23 cm e se vengono schiacciate emanano un forte odore di muffa. I fiori sono rosa, con una forma a cappuccio, da 3 a 4 cm di lunghezza e 2 cm di larghezza. I baccelli verdi, i semi, le foglie giovani e i germogli sono tutti commestibili e i fiori possono essere trasformati in una marmellata o in un semifreddo
Impatiens flaccida
Specie originaria dei Ghati occidentali in India e dello Sri Lanka , si tratta di una pianta erbacea che cresce eretta e può arrivare a 50 cm di altezza. Le foglie alterne sono ovato-lanceolate, lunghe da 3 a 8 cm e larghe da 2 a 3,5 cm. I fiori sono viola chiaro con occhi scuri e sono larghi da 3 a 4 cm; di questa specie esistono diverse varietà a fiori bianchi.
Impatiens balsamina
Impatiens balsamina è una specie semirustica facile da coltivare in vaso e a dimora ,originaria dell’Asia conosciuta come balsamina o begliuomini. Può raggiungere i 70-80 cm di altezza e presenta foglie lanceolate di un bel colore verde brillante con margini dentati. I fiori sono di colore rosa-violetto che spuntano all’ascella delle foglie.
Impatiens repens
L’impatiens repens è una specie originaria dello Sri Lanka,si può trovare nella zona umida delle foreste pluviali e come indica il suo nome è una pianta a crescita bassa con un portamento strisciante che può raggiungere i 50 cm di altezza. Le foglie sono piccole a forma di rene portate su steli rossi , i fiori sono di colore giallo – oro e sono presenti dall’ estate all’autunno. Si tratta di una pianta perfetta per essere coltivata in cestini sospesi. Nelle zone a clima temperato va protetta da temperature inferiori ai 10 ° C, quindi va coltivata in serra durante i mesi invernali, necessita di una posizione riparata in mezz’ombra.
Impatiens noli-me-tangere
Questa specie è l’unica della famiglia delle Balsaminaceae che cresce spontaneo in Italia, si può trovare nei boschi o sulle montagne in un ambiente tendenzialmente umido e ombroso. Si moltiplica per seme ed è molto facile che si autodissemini.
Coltivazione dell’ impatiens
Sono piante apprezzate non solo per la varietà, la bellezza e l’abbondanza dei loro fiori ma anche perché sono di facile coltivazione, di rapido accrescimento e non molto soggette a malattie. Le specie più basse si possono usare nelle aiuole come coprisuolo o, quelle più alte nelle bordure abbinare a tutte le piante da ombra.
Esposizione e clima
Sono piante che prediligono le zone semiombreggiate o anche all’ombra completa, il sole diretto provoca ustioni alle foglie e causa un rapido appassimento delle piante. Non tollerano le correnti d’aria fredda e temperature inferiori ai 5-10°C, mentre quella ideale è intorno ai 18°C ma sopporta anche temperature più elevate, proprio per questo si coltivano come annuali o come piante da appartamento durante i mesi più freddi. Le piante tenute in appartamento vanno collocate in ottima luce ma non al sole diretto, lontano dalle correnti d’aria e dai termosifoni.
Terreno e rinvaso
Le Impatiens preferiscono un terreno leggero, umido e ricco di materia organica. Nel terreno del giardino si mescola del terriccio fertile , con torba e sabbia o altro materiale drenante per favorire il drenaggio dell’acqua.
Il rinvasano si effettua in primavera e solo quando le radici hanno occupato tutto lo spazio a loro disposizione utilizzando vasi poco più grandi del precedente, in vasi più grandi le piante svilupperebbero maggiormente l’apparato radicale a svantaggio della parte aerea.
Innaffiatura
In primavera e in estate il substrato deve essere mantenuto costantemente umido ma evitando i ristagni idrici, per le piante in vaso è consigliabile svuotare il sottovaso per evitare il marciume delle radici. Le innaffiature devono essere regolari, sono piante che temono la siccità quindi si deve evitare di tenere il terreno asciutto per periodi prolungati . Nei periodi siccitosi e in estate si può innaffiare anche ogni 2 giorni, nel periodo autunno – invernale gli interventi vanno sensibilmente diminuiti tenendo conto della temperatura ambientale.
Per creare l’umidità ambientale si sistema dell’argilla espansa nel sottovaso in cui sarà presente un filo d’acqua, ma facendo attenzione che il vaso non sia a contatto con l’acqua. Le nebulizzazioni alle foglie non sono consigliate l’eccessiva umidità fogliare può favorire lo sviluppo di muffe e parassiti.
Concimazione
La concimazione si effettua dalla primavera all’estate a cadenza settimanale, utilizzando un concime liquido specifico per piante da fiore da diluire nell’acqua delle innaffiature e che contenga macroelementi e microelementi anch’essi importanti per una crescita armoniosa della pianta.
Come moltiplicare l’impatiens

La semina si effettua in un vassoio distribuendo i semi il più uniformemente possibile su un terriccio per semi, i semi sono piccoli e per interrarli leggermente, si usa un pezzo di legno piatto spingeteli sotto il terriccio. In attesa della germinazione il substrato va tenuto umido con uno spruzzatore. Il contenitore va tenuto all’ombra a 20 – 23°C, con un foglio di plastica trasparente che va tolto quando appaiono i germogli, poi si aumenta la quantità di luce ma non il sole diretto e si attende che le piante sono grandi da poter essere trapiantate.
Le talee si prelevano dai germogli apicali dei rami laterali, tagliandole sotto il nodo e devono essere lunghe 10-15 cm, vanno eliminate le foglie più basse messe a radicare in acqua, le radici si formeranno in pochi giorni e poi si trasferiscono in singoli vasi in un substrato di torba e sabbia e si sistemano in un posto con poca luce per almeno 1-2 settimane in attesa della comparsa dei primi germogli.
Potatura
La potatura dell’impatiens consiste nella cimatura cioè nell’asportare l’apice vegetativo delle pianta allo scopo di favorire la formazione di rami laterali , vanno anche eliminati i rami danneggiati vicino al terreno per evitare che marcendo possano essere veicolo di malattie fungine.
Malattie, parassiti e cure
Sono piante che non vengono colpite facilmente da malattie e parassiti , può capitare che in ambienti poco ventilati si sviluppa l’oidio sulle foglie in questi casi si può ricorrere a fungicidi specifici da acquistare nei garden center. Nelle piante coltivate in giardino sui nuovi germogli possono annidarsi gli afidi e le lumache possono mangiucchiare le foglie.

Per combattere questi insetti si possono rimuovere meccanicamente lavando la pianta o tramite antiparassitari specifici facilmente reperibili da un buon vivaista.
Le lumache e le limacce rovinano in modo evidente le foglie delle piante. Nei casi non gravi si asportano manualmente, se vogliamo prevenire gli attacchi si sparge alla base delle piante della cenere per rendere difficile il movimento della lumaca. Nei casi di infestazioni spesso si interviene con un lumachicida in granuli.
